Are You Listening To The World Or The Word?

Are You Listening To The World Or The Word?

Girl reading the Book

In Matthew 7 we read the words of Jesus after He had given the Sermon on the Mount and done more extensive teaching. He goes on to say:

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

It is critical that we spend time with the Lord in the Word so that we fully adopt and are influenced by the truths of Scripture for everyday living, and not the cultural beliefs and perspectives of the day. We do need to stay continually on our guard. As Psalms 1:2 says,

“ …his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”

Take Care Of Your Heart

Praying woman.

If you do not have a set plan for your devotional life, or if you’ve not been as consistent as you would like to, here are some ideas for you. One of the easiest ways to stay regularly in the Word of God is to take 5 minutes sometime during the day, choose a book of the Bible you want to read, and start by reading only one paragraph but no more than a chapter. Ask God as you read, what He wants you to think about, respond to, or change of heart He desires for you. Feel free to use a commentary online to help you.
